AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Characteristics of an AVID Student
 
GPA of 2.0-3.5
  • No attendance or discipline problems
  • Are willing to commit to enrollment in rigorous college preparatory sequence of courses
  • Are willing to commit to staying in AVID for all four years of high school
  • Has the desire to attend a four year college or university
  • Usually a first-generation college student (parents did not go to college)
  • Decided to join AVID independently, not because of parents
  • Are willing to complete two hours of extracurricular activities and/or tutoring each week

  • Improving writing and critical reading skills
  • Developing communication skills (oral and written)
  • Quickwrites and reflections
  • Note-taking practice and strategies for improvement
  • Collaborative tutorial sessions with peer, college, and teacher tutors
  • Binder evaluation
  • Guest speakers
  • Motivational activities
